What can you discover about your novel by telling its story in five poems?

Every novel has turning points that shape its central conflict and carry the story forward. Understanding those moments can help you see where your story is going, whether you’re just beginning to imagine it, deep in a draft, or working through a revision.

But what happens when you approach those turning points as a poet?

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll identify five key milestones in your story, then write a poem for each one. Poetry invites us to think and feel our way into the deeper themes of our work, and the results can be surprising. You may uncover secrets you didn’t know were hidden in your novel, discover new possibilities for your characters, or find your way past a place where you’ve been stuck.

By the end, you’ll have a miniature novel-in-verse and a fresh way of seeing your characters, conflicts, and the movement of your story.

No poetry experience necessary! Bring a novel you’re working on, one you’re just beginning to imagine, or a story idea you’d like to explore.
