Years ago, when I was already publishing fiction but couldn’t seem to break through with my poetry, I took a workshop with Margaret Kellermann.

Something in the way she taught — the permission she gave, the lack of pressure, the deep attention to the natural world and the inner one — quietly cut me loose on the page.

My writing changed.
It deepened.
My poems began finding homes.
My stories became richer.

I’ve watched that same shift happen for countless writers in her presence.

Margaret is a poet, author of fiction and nonfiction, and longtime journal guide, having taught journal-keeping workshops for more than 30 years. More than anything, she has a rare gift for helping writers set down their self-consciousness and simply write — freely, honestly, without trying to “get it right.”

This two-session online studio, held over one weekend is a chance to experience that kind of writing space for yourself.

Together, we’ll use journaling not as a side practice, but as a source practice — the place where voice loosens, images surface, and the work begins to move again.

This workshop is especially welcoming if you’re:
– between projects or returning after time away
– stuck in the middle of a draft
– writing steadily but feeling tight or over-edited
– or longing for more ease, depth, and fluency on the page

No critique.
No grades.
No pressure to perform.

Just guided prompts, time to write, and the steady presence of a teacher who knows how to unlock the door.

Each 90-minute session blends short craft insights, playful and non-judgmental writing invitations, and quiet space to discover what wants to come through. You’ll leave with fresh pages — and language you can carry back into your poems, stories, essays, or current work-in-progress.

Because journaling isn’t separate from our writing life.

It’s often where our truest writing begins.

We’ll explore inventive journaling methods to help you write naturally in your fiction, nonfiction and poetry:

Set aside old rules and expectations. Practice fearless, unfenced writing that restores energy and creative freedom.

Enjoying the Perks of Journaling as a Writer
Release comparisons with others. Rediscover your expressive style that will support all of your writing.

Using All (Yes, All) the Senses
Go beyond the usual five senses — into balance, humor, and intuition — to create writing that feels fully alive.
