A Day Inside Your Story
Spend a summer day beside the lake exploring the connection between body, imagination, and character. Through improv, writing exercises, conversation, and reflection, we’ll investigate the hidden currents beneath dialogue—the emotions, physical sensations, distractions, memories, and desires that make fictional people feel real.
Let’s step away from our desks and into the experience of story itself.
The retreat will take place in the lakeside cabana at Village By the Lake, surrounded by wetlands, water lilies, trees, and abundant birdlife. Between sessions, you’ll have opportunities to walk the shoreline, watch the heron stalk the shallows, listen to red-winged blackbirds in the reeds, and give your imagination room to breathe.

During this immersive day retreat, Karen Patricia Neal will help you:
- Recognize the hidden emotional and physical life beneath dialogue. Discover why real conversations are never just an exchange of words—and how to bring what characters are feeling, avoiding, wanting, and noticing onto the page.
- Write subtext that readers can feel. Learn how tension, desire, discomfort, distraction, and unspoken conflict create richer scenes than dialogue alone.
- Use the body as a storytelling tool. Explore how physical sensation, posture, gesture, and movement reveal character in ways exposition never can.
- Observe human behavior with an actor’s eye. Borrow techniques from theatre and improvisation to notice the small details that make fictional people believable.
- Transform “talking heads” into living characters. Practice writing conversations in which characters react, perceive, misinterpret, and respond as real people do.
- Experience your scenes from the inside out. Through guided improv exercises, you’ll physically inhabit moments of tension, distraction, connection, and conflict before translating them to the page.
- Leave with pages you can use immediately. Throughout the day, you’ll move between discussion, improv, and writing exercises, creating new material while developing techniques you can apply to every scene you write.
Here’s how the day unfolds:
- We’ll begin by exploring ordinary conversation and discovering how much is happening beneath the surface of even the simplest human interaction.
- Karen will guide you through improv exercises that reveal the hidden emotions, distractions, physical sensations, and desires that shape every exchange between people.
- You’ll learn how actors communicate inner life through behavior, movement, and presence—and how writers can create the same effect on the page.
- You’ll immediately apply those discoveries to your own fiction, writing scenes and conversations drawn from your work-in-progress.
- Throughout the day, you’ll alternate between experience and craft, testing ideas through physical practice before translating them into language.
- By the time you leave, you’ll understand how to create dialogue that carries subtext, tension, and emotional truth—and how to write characters who feel fully alive to readers.
